Do you know anyone who still have the same template as you? If so, ask them to go to the Design tab, click on 'Edit HTML' and then 'Download Full Template'. This will produce an XML file that they can send to you which you can then upload using the same screen on your machine. Before I muck around with my design I always download a full template first in case of mistakes.

so strange, i noticed blogger behaving erratically these last couple of days, but not to this extent!
i hope you can solve this soon, i know how frustrating template-problems can be :-(
